China's polysilicon production rose 53.5 per cent to about 365,000 tonnes in the first half of the year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Silicon wafer production rose 45.5% to 152.8GW, while crystal silicon component production rose 54.1% to 123.6GW. But module exports grew faster, jumping 74.3% to 78.6 gigawatts, and the total value of solar PV products surged 113.1% to $25.9 billion.
After rising for 20 straight weeks, Chinese polysilicon prices reached an average of 273,100 yuan per tonne at the end of June, the highest since 2011, according to the Silicon Industry branch of the China Non-Ferrous Metal Industry Association (CNIA). The mismatch between supply and downstream wafer capacity expansion has pushed prices up from an average of 80,000 yuan per tonne since the beginning of 2021, and CNIA expects strong demand to continue to push prices higher.
